Monday, March 29: Few things are needed

Read Luke 10:38-42

The last days of Jesus' earthly life are filled with significant events and teachings. During these weeks leading up to Easter, we'll travel with Jesus toward Jerusalem and his crucifixion, marveling at his determination to finally fulfill his destiny as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.

Read Luke 10:38-42

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!"

"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."

Reflect

Even after Jesus had set his heart and mind on his fateful journey to Jerusalem, he intentionally took the time to stop and experience community with those he loved. What's the significance of Jesus' words to Martha, especially in light of where this journey would lead him?

Respond

Lord Jesus, help me, as you implored Martha, to choose what is better in my life and in my journey with you. May I see the few central things that are needed, and not worry about the many things scattered around the edges of my life. Amen.
